A DELICATE CATASTROPHE
I love diving and observing the serene, beautiful landscape that exists in our oceans. After personal experiences of seeing so much rubbish under the water in Thailand, Bali, and Mexico, this photographic series was inspired to demonstrate both the beauty and calm of being under the water, as well as the destruction we are placing on our planet by excessive use of plastic.

The mermaid is represented in folklore in cultures all over the world as both beautiful and catastrophic.
PARADOX
The images and stories of mermaids can depict enchanting seduction, with nefarious undertones.
CONTRADICTION

Some images feature ‘coral spawn’ layers to represent the underwater world creating new life, scenes that depict the earth determined to grow, but paradoxically, the cataclysmic intervention of plastic working against it.
REBIRTH?
I have deliberately used some images of plastic masks and gloves due to the increase in waste from the coronavirus pandemic.
LUMIÈRE

Art is created to be interpreted in many ways and I hope this series of photographs evokes contradicting feelings of both peace and melancholy.
EXISTING
As the model floats gracefully, the 100% recycled plastic dress design captures the essence of a mermaid, highlighting the urgent issue of plastic pollution.
SUCCUMB

This striking piece serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of waste on our oceans.
ONE
THE MERMAID'S TALE
To present this concept, I have placed the photographs into an animated presentation alike that of stop-motion animation; the purpose to mimic stop-motion animation between photographs was to purposefully make a slow moving animation.

A very special thank you to model Johanna Leonhardt, and Doctor of Marine Biology, for her contribution to this project and her dedication to protecting the future of the world's oceans
